Creating or Editing Multimedia

Artificial intelligence offers new opportunities to enhance creativity, expand access and streamline production in multimedia creation and editing.

Artificial intelligence offers new opportunities to enhance creativity, expand access and streamline production in multimedia creation and editing. At Emory University, responsible AI use in this context requires transparency, respect for intellectual property, and adherence to ethical standards. While AI tools can support design, editing, and content generation, they must not obscure authorship, bypass informed consent, or compromise the rights of individuals depicted or represented.

This guidance explains how to apply AI in multimedia projects while upholding Emory's Responsible AI standards.

Best Practices

All AI-generated multimedia must be reviewed to ensure factual accuracy, appropriate representation, alignment with the content objectives, and adherence to legal requirements (e.g. intellectual property rights). This is especially critical in educational, healthcare, or professional environments, where misinformation or visual misrepresentation may carry significant consequences.

If multimedia is inaccurate, misleading, or contextually inappropriate, it should not be used for internal / external communications.

Obtain consent before using an individual’s name, image, or likeness in multimedia content, unless applicable legal standards do not require consent.Use of AI tools on previously created content may require renewed consent. These requirements apply to both Emory community members, such as employees and students, as well as individuals not affiliated with Emory. When requesting permission, provide clear information about the intended use of an image or recording and notify individuals promptly if the usage or context changes.

Before producing or publishing any AI-generated content on behalf of Emory, individuals must consult Emory Communications and Marketing for guidance and approval. Brand standards include the use of approved language, typography, color palettes, design systems, and official logos. Any AI-generated content intended for internal or external distribution should reflect the tone, style, and identity of the relevant Emory entity to ensure brand coherence.

The requirements to follow brand standards and obtain review by Emory Communications and Marketing do not apply to personal or academic projects, such as class assignments or student-created videos produced independently of university communications.
